Bio-Based Butyl Acrylate Initiative Expands Renewable Raw Material Options

Synthomer and Godavari Biorefineries Limited have announced a collaboration to commercialize bio-based butyl acrylate derived from renewable feedstocks.

According to the companies, the material will be produced using bio-based butanol supplied by GBL. Butyl acrylate is widely used as a key raw material in polymers that support products such as adhesives, coatings, and sealants.

Synthomer stated that the initiative is intended to provide manufacturers with access to lower-carbon raw material options while maintaining compatibility with existing formulations and production processes.

Chris Brown, Vice President of ESG at Synthomer, said the collaboration allows the company to offer customers alternatives to fossil-based monomers while supporting efforts to reduce emissions across supply chains.

Godavari Biorefineries reported that its integrated biorefinery operations use renewable feedstocks to produce bio-based chemicals. Chairman and Managing Director Samir Somaiya said the partnership reflects the company’s strategy to advance green chemistry and expand adoption of renewable materials across the chemical value chain.

For manufacturers seeking to incorporate renewable inputs into their products, the availability of bio-based monomers may provide additional pathways to address sustainability goals and regulatory requirements, according to the companies.
