Lower-Carbon pMDI Offers Drop-In Option for Insulation and Appliance Manufacturers

Covestro, a global manufacturer of high-performance polymer materials, has introduced Desmodur® ClimateValue (CV), a new pMDI grade designed to help manufacturers reduce the carbon footprint of rigid polyurethane insulation products without changing existing formulations or production processes.

According to the company, the material provides an approximately 25% reduction in Product Carbon Footprint compared with standard Desmodur® grades used for insulation applications. The reduction is supported by a certified cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment methodology.

Rigid polyurethane foam based on MDI is widely used in building insulation boards, metal-faced sandwich panels, and refrigeration appliances. For manufacturers in these markets, Covestro stated that the new grade can provide a direct way to lower the raw-material carbon footprint of finished products while supporting Scope 3 emissions targets and sustainability reporting.

Because Desmodur® CV is designed as a drop-in replacement, manufacturers can transition to the material without modifying existing formulations or processing equipment.

Covestro attributes the reduced footprint to renewable energy, process innovation, efficiency improvements, and supply chain decarbonization. The company said the carbon-footprint methodology is certified by TÜV Rheinland and aligned with recognized ISO and Together for Sustainability guidelines.

The product is currently available to European pMDI customers supplied from Covestro’s German production sites.
